Check Credit Report Free Once a Year – Is it Enough?

Hector Milla asked:

The answer to this question is a resounding “No”. Checking a credit report once a year is not enough by a long shot, for a large variety of reasons. Unfortunately, it is what most people do, as the government offers a free report once a year at the Annual Credit Report website, but with a small investment, it is simple to get a much better deal.

So the question is: Why is it not enough? The first answer to this is that the consumer who uses this option does not see the score associated with the report. While the report that one receives does show everything that the credit agencies see, they do not show the associated score. And this is a big deal, because formulas that are used to calculate the score are arcane trade secrets. It is nearly impossible for anyone outside of an agency to see these formulas, and they can be full of surprises. Someone can have nothing negative in their record and still have only an average score. One must see the score to know what to expect.

Another problem is that many people use this once-a-year viewing of their credit to watch out for identity theft. Identity theft can, and does, happen overnight, and checking once a year is not enough to prevent that at all. Nobody looking for identity theft would check their credit card statement once a year. No, one must view his or her report at least once a month to see if somebody is maliciously opening accounts in his or her name. Checking once a year can only reassure a consumer that their identity is not being stolen at that instant. In fact, with that time interval, somebody could easily open and then close an account before someone notices.

With this being said, what is the solution? The solution is that one cannot rely on free tools. One must sign up for a subscription website that allows him or her to view the credit information, including the score, far more than once a year. Good websites for such a service include freecreditreport.com and creditreport.com. These websites, for a small monthly subscription fee, allow a consumer to view his or her credit report at regular intervals, typically once a month. This can keep one far more alert and gives far more information than one could ever get from any free source available.

Free Government Credit Checks

Peter Emerson asked:

In the United States, the Federal Government plays a key role in providing its citizens with free credit reports on the Internet. The Federal Government does so through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and its website (www.AnnualCreditReport.com). The difference between this website and other sites that offer free credit checks is that it does not require you to enter a credit card number, which can lead to identity theft.

As with other credit check websites, requesting a credit report will require you to provide your name, your address, your social security number and your date of birth. The FTC has also put up hotlines where people can request for their credit reports through the phone or by mail. The credit reports that will be provided by the FTC will also contain the four types of information (identifying, credit record, public record, and new debt), and your credit score that can be found on the credit reports of other websites.

Another feature of this service is that you can request for credit reports on a quarterly basis, which will enable you to monitor your credit reports and correct any wrong information that will be placed there without having to wait for an annual credit report. This will also ensure that your creditors will be provided with the accurate information as to your credit worthiness.

Although the free credit reports are not widely available to all residents of the United States, a system has been put in place to ensure access to most Americans in the near future. Given that the Federal Government has joined the effort in providing people with free credit reports, it can be expected that loans will be processed more easily because important information such as your accurate credit score will be readily available.

Find Furniture on Credit With No Credit Check

Albert Avnon asked:

So let’s say you passed by a furniture shop and found that living room set that you’ve been searching for all this time. But let’s also say that you have a bad credit history behind you that prevents you from buying it. This can be frustrating for some, especially for those who are obsessive-compulsive about protecting their credit score. In this case, what should you do to get that sofa out of that shop and into your front door?

While thinking of ways to do so, the thought of asking for a loan will no doubt cross our minds at some point. But it won’t be so easy especially if you’re notorious for not paying your dues, and this shows through your bad credit history and credit score. So what would you do if you were the one placed in this unfortunate dilemma? Ultimately, the choice is yours, and choosing is made easier with the existence of no credit checks.

With your bad credit history in the way, it’s hard to buy the things that you both want and need in your home. This often happens when you apply for loans that you don’t pay back on time or at all, and this is what often gets people in a boatload of trouble. No credit checks avoids this problem altogether, and payment is as simple as it gets with minimal to non-existent interest.

Thankfully, you can now find and buy the furniture you want on credit. However, it has its own limitations. For one thing, most no credit check loans are made for the short-term, and even then you can’t borrow that big an amount of money. If you want to borrow more, you would have to pay something as collateral, and you would probably tend to lose more money in the longer run.

As mentioned previously, you’d have to pay collateral for the longer-term deals, and they can be secured by means of sacrificing personal effects such as jewelery and watches. If you can’t pay on time or if you default on your loan, it won’t be hard to sell the properties to pay off the loan. But of course, any excess money is returned to you, the client, but the chances of you seeing that Rolex ever again range from slim to none.

So before making that decision, first ask yourself if this risk, albeit minimal, is worth it. Is buying that coffee table really necessary for your home? Is it worth losing life, limb, and your mother’s gold necklace and family heirloom over?

When buying furniture -or anything else at all for that matter -the top priority should be to pay your dues on time. Not all credit checks are foolproof, but they do provide you with an easier means to borrow money if you have a bad credit history and an undesirable-looking credit score. Weigh the risks carefully before buying because you’d probably end up with something way more than you can chew. If you can hack it, then go for it.
