My credit is really bad and I want to know if it will make me disqualified. I know that they do a background credit check, but what is it they actuallu look for. I lost my job and I am in a region that is a very poor work economy and I found a job in another state to help this clear up. Do I still have a chance to apply and get a job as a police officer?

It may. Your credit history is always looked at for jobs that require honesty or integrity. 1) if you can’t handle your own debt, how will you handle harder things. 2) if you go into debt, you are an easier target for bribes and extortion 3) if you are in a lot of debt, you may be more tempted to steal on the job, 4) it can be a signal that your judgement isn’t always the best… this is not always fair, but it is the reason they check.

From experience, it’s unclear whether certain employers hold bad credit against you. Normally though, it’s in finance jobs that bad credit will stop you getting a job. I would not think that it will stop you getting in the police department as you will not be handling money.
