Can you find out a person hasn’t paid their taxes by doing a credit check?

my friend wants to move into an apartment that requires a credit check, and needs a cosigner, but his parents havent paid taxes in years. Will that affect his chances?

Credit checks is about bad credit.. or good credit.. taxes are the property of the federal government that is in their records not a credit company.

Not unless there are tax liens against them that are reported by the courts to the credit bureaus. Tax liens will show up on credit reports under public information together with bankruptcies, criminal records, etc.

That’s his parents so even if that was a part of credit, it wouldn’t involve him

Having a credit check won’t trigger an IRS audit. Credit reporting agencies aren’t affiliated with the IRS.
The only thing that could affect your friend’s chances of getting the apt. is his parent’s actual credit history.
If his parents owe taxes on a tax return that they did in the past, the IRS will put that as a lien in their credit report. However, if they haven’t files taxes, there’s no record of money owed. Hopefully by the time his parents are in hot water for not filing, he won’t need them to co-sign anymore…
