Credit Check?
Answer Girl 2007 asked:
I have bad credit. I have a few credit cards that are sent to the collection agency. I have a car and I’ve paid it on time every month for the last 3 years.

I just got offered a new job; however, before officially being hired I need to do a credit check.
The HR people at the company said as long as I can get a credit card, I can pass the check. Every once in a while, I’ll get a pre-approved credit card offer from some crappy 2nd or 3rd rate bank. Does that count.
Do you think I will lose the job b/c my credit is bad?
Not fired, but I will not receive (lose) the job offer.

If your potential employer is a financial company in Canada, you may not get the job. In Canada it is illegal to hire someone with bad credit in a bank, etc. (You can be fired too if your credit goes bad).
Otherwise, you may be alright because you have a good history with a car loan. Go to a credit counsellor for the credit cards. (They can be found in the Yellow Pages of your telephone directory). It is good to have them help you break down your debt into manageable payments that you can afford. This will repair your bad credit faster and save you from this type of anxiety in the future.

Unless you are in financial planning, this should not make you lose your job. To raise your credit score….pay off the collection agency items. It will then note that it’s “settled” and close out. Once closed out, it will drop off in seven years. But simply settling the amount will definitely raise your score. If you don’t pay off the collections, if the company never writes it off as a loss, it will always stay on there.
fyi—credit card company usually target people with bad debts, don’t go for it.
