Do you think it is right for potential employers to be able to check your credit report?

Matthew M asked:

My previous job did a credit check and actually called me before I started work there. The district manager was asking me if I am aware that I have bad marks on my credit report. I know that some other employers will actually deny you of a job if your credit is bad enough.

Yes it is right for potential employers to do a credit check specially if you will have cash responsibilities like a cashier or a collector or a bookkeeper or if you work with a bank or a financing company. No law is stopping them from giving you a credit check. Most companies however advise you that they will do a credit check and they will let you sign a document allowing them to do the check. Credit Checking in most companies is SOP.

sure if you want to work at a bank or some other job dealing with money. people with a lot of debt may be tempted to steal money. for other jobs it makes no sense. sorry to say even insurance co. check your credit. its BS but they do. ***. not paying bills makes me a bad driver. more bs. gives them an excuse to charge more.

Yup, it’s totally right. Your credit says a lot about you as a person.

It gives someone an idea of if you’re responsible in general, if you can control yourself, and how you deal with tough situations.

The solution might just be to improve your credit. That’ll give you an edge over the competition

Employers have a right to know if someone is sloppy with their personal finances or deep in trouble and might pose a security risk.
