Does a credit check from an apartment count against you?

schr91 asked:

I was curious I just applied for a very nice apartment in a nice part of town and was approved! Exciting for me, yes but my question is does this credit check they ran on me count against my credit score? I am not technically applying for credit so its not quite the same as applying for a credit card where they will be extending me a line of credit, so will this adversely affect my credit score?

No, it does not effect your credit score one bit. The housing company was just checking to make sure you are a good risk as a tenant and not a total loser. Many companies can do a check on you (limited one) just to see if they want to send you a credit offer.
Sounds like you have no problems – congrats!

This is a “hard” inquiry. In of itself it will not damage your credit…just don’t go around filling out multiple applicators for new credit (or new apartments) all at the same time as this will count against you.

from personal experience…it did. but in different circumstances. we were test driving cars and come to find out every dealer we went to was running a credit check on us which ultimately affected our credit score. (temporarily) just be aware of exactly what is going on and make sure they are not running a full buying credit report.
