How do you do a credit check on someone?

Rosie asked:

Hi there.
I want to rent out my parking space, but I need to do a credit check before I lease it? Can you explain how since I’m a newbie to this stuff?
Thank you much.

A credit reporting agency will not provide a credit report to an individual, even with authorization. For a one time credit check you should go to a local verification company, or background verifying type of company. Many larger cities have them because landlords use them to verify possible tenants. You will have to have the proposed renter sign an agreement for you to do a credit check and it will likely cost you $35 or more, so you may want to include this amount in your fee. Check your area for “verification” services and you should be able to find a company that can help.
