How does the credit check in AUSTRALIA work ?
w1nd asked:
This is specifically in regards to the credit check phone companies run against your name when you decide to sign onto a plan with them. Call me paranoid but I don’t feel comfortable with attendants sifting through my personal details. If I only have a bank account , and I’ve never had any loans, credit cards , or arrears whatsoever , will I even HAVE a credit file ?

STACY
All of your details are uploaded into the company’s system (Telstra, Optus or whoever) and the computer does the checking and give the consultant an answer and will sometime score you. They base it on your affordablility (income) and your willingness to repay account/loans and what you have already got (which they pull down form Baycorp etc).
They may limit you to certain plans/phones dependant upon your score (and also your income).
I’ve worked for a big mobile telco with mobile phone activations and now sell finance and can tell you the only people who get to look through your file is the computer system (or in the case of finance, specialised acceptance staff).
You dont have to worry about some call centre employee going through your credit file – company’s want to limit themselves to risk of unauthorised staff going through your info and dont allow it (thats what the computer are for as they can give an unbiased opinion and it lessens the risk for fraud).
