Free Government Credit Checks

Peter Emerson asked:

In the United States, the Federal Government plays a key role in providing its citizens with free credit reports on the Internet. The Federal Government does so through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and its website (www.AnnualCreditReport.com). The difference between this website and other sites that offer free credit checks is that it does not require you to enter a credit card number, which can lead to identity theft.

As with other credit check websites, requesting a credit report will require you to provide your name, your address, your social security number and your date of birth. The FTC has also put up hotlines where people can request for their credit reports through the phone or by mail. The credit reports that will be provided by the FTC will also contain the four types of information (identifying, credit record, public record, and new debt), and your credit score that can be found on the credit reports of other websites.

Another feature of this service is that you can request for credit reports on a quarterly basis, which will enable you to monitor your credit reports and correct any wrong information that will be placed there without having to wait for an annual credit report. This will also ensure that your creditors will be provided with the accurate information as to your credit worthiness.

Although the free credit reports are not widely available to all residents of the United States, a system has been put in place to ensure access to most Americans in the near future. Given that the Federal Government has joined the effort in providing people with free credit reports, it can be expected that loans will be processed more easily because important information such as your accurate credit score will be readily available.

Free Credit Checks

Alison Cole asked:

Credit checks are done to determine a person’s credit score. The credit score is an indication of a person’s financial creditworthiness. It is used to verify whether the person qualifies for a loan, or any other credit, based on whether he has repaid his past loans satisfactorily. A credit score is used by banks and other lending companies for estimating how risky the borrower is. In other words, a credit report is a reflection of the past credit history of an individual.

Credit checks are generally done by lending agencies such as banks and credit card companies. They are done when you apply for a loan. A credit check can also be done by a house owner to determine whether an individual would make a good tenant or not or by an employer. Insurance companies also conduct credit checks.

Credit reports can be obtained for free as per the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). According to this act, once a year, every person is entitled to receive a free credit report from each of the three consumer reporting companies in the U.S.: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This credit report would contain information about the person’s address, how he/she pays the bills, and whether he/she has been sued, arrested, or filed for bankruptcy. A bank or a lending institution can buy these reports about an individual from any of these companies.

The report can be ordered through a centralized website, annualcreditreport.com, which contains the required form. You need to provide some basic information including name, address, social security number, and date of birth. A credit report is essential to guard against identity theft like credit card misuse or other frauds. You also need to keep the report updated as lending companies would be using these reports to check your credit worthiness when you apply for a loan.

There are many companies that claim to provide free credit checks and reports. However, these are generally used to just attract people towards their other services. The free services are only for limited periods.

How to Check Your Credit Score For Free

Jeslyn Jessy asked:

According to the Federal Law passed in 2005, everyone in UK is eligible to receive one free credit report annually from each credit bureau. You can check your credit history and safeguard your credit score at zero cost. Let me show you some simple steps to obtain your credit file on complimentary basis.

Step 1: Go to the official website of Annual Credit Report organization

Why do you need to go to this particular website? Seriously speaking, for security purpose, you are advised not to request your credit file from other parties. In UK, the Annual Credit Report website is the only authorized online source where the consumers can access their file for free under the Federal Law. Hence, you should not go direct to the credit reporting agencies if you want to get a copy of your file for free.

Step 2: Fill up the online form

Go to the website and fill up the online form carefully. You are required to provide your full name, address, social security number and the date of birth.

Step 3: Decide how many reports you wish to receive

Once you have provided your personal details, you should then decide whether you want to receive your report from one, two or three credit bureaus. In my personal point of view, you should request from all bureaus since you can get all reports for free. At the same time, you can check whether the details shown in all files are the same and there is no mistake.

Step 4: Print your online report

Once you have made your selection, a screen will appear allowing you to immediately print your report. Here is an important reminder for you. You MUST PRINT your report. If you don’t print at this time, you will lose your eligibility for a free file until next year.

If you are not internet savvy, don’t worry. You are recommended to contact this organization at 1-877-322-8228 to request for your free credit report. The officers who attend the call normally require the callers to answer some simple questions for verification purpose. Once they have identified the callers’ personal details, they will deliver the reports to the callers within two to three weeks.

When you have received your credit report, you are reminded to read and check it for accuracy. Make sure all the information is updated. If you find any inaccurate item, you must make your report to the credit bureau immediately.

Now, what if you need your report again a few months later? Can you still obtain it for free? It depends on the situation. If you are currently unemployed and you are receiving unemployment benefits or public assistance, you are still eligible to get your credit file at no cost. However, if you don’t fall under this category, you need to pay the reporting agencies for each report you need.

To sum up, everyone is entitled for a free report every year. You will only be required to pay for the report under certain unusual circumstances.

loika61 asked:

Hey there- I am applying for jobs and noticing that many companies require you to fill out the credit check application or background check and hand it in with your application. This requires your date of birth prior to the interview (along with SS# for all to see) How does this conflict work with the potential of age discrimination? My prior company did these after offer and results dependent upon actual hire. Any thoughts?
